Distinctive Unit Insignia.  Description:   A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of, on a black disc, a shield blazoned:  "Per fess Gules and Argent, in chief a stylized crenellated fort Or with three windows Sable, in base two sabers, points up saltirewise surmounted by a spur winged at its tip by a vol of the third," attached below and to the sides of the shield a semi-circular green scroll inscribed "GUARDIANS OF THE LOW COUNTRY" in gold letters.

        Symbolism:  Scarlet and white, the spur and the crossed sabers represent Cavalry.  The fort refers to the historic Beaufort Arsenal associated with the unit.  The vol attached to the spur denotes quick response to mission requirements and the speed with which operations are carried out.  Green recalls association with the Armor Branch.  Black indicates strength and solidarity.  Gold denotes excellence.

        Background:   The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 31 October 2003 .

        Blazon:

                Shield:   Per fess Gules and Argent, in chief a stylized crenellated fort Or with three windows Sable, in base two sabers, points up saltirewise surmounted by a spur winged at its tip by a vol Gris.

                Crest:   That for the regiments and separate battalions of the South Carolina Army National Guard:  From a wreath Argent and Gules, upon a mount Vert a palmetto tree Proper charged with a crescent Argent.

                Motto:   GUARDIANS OF THE LOW COUNTRY.

Symbolism:

                Shield:   The colors scarlet and white, the spur and the crossed sabers represent Cavalry.  Association with the Beaufort Arsenal is referred to by the stylized gold fort in chief.  Black denotes strength and solidarity. The scarlet and white division of the shield alludes again to Cavalry, recalling the old Cavalry guidon.  The wings on the spur and the vol, represent the speed and efficiency of unit operations.  White signifies integrity, scarlet denotes courage and sacrifice.

                Crest:    The crest is that of the South Carolina Army National Guard.
