The frontier soldiers always had a bandana, scarf, neckerchief, handkerchief, or hankey! It kept the dust off while riding the trail. Also, they would wet the rag and put it on their head under their slouch hats to keep cool. The scarves prevented sunburn, served as a bandage or tourniquet, and even worked as a field-expedient coffee filter! It wasn't until the cowboy movies of the 40's and the illustrations of such great artists like Frederic Remington that the yellow scarf was used to represent the Cavalry Trooper...and they have remained a symbol ever since! These red and white ascots are more designed to provide a formal appearance for honor guard, color guard, ceremonies and parades. They look great with a Stetson, but then again, what doesn't?
