Quick Overview

Dragoon orange Civil War style Cavalry Hat Cords. One size wool cords. These are also sometimes referred to as hobbles, hat cords, hat bands, hat braids, hat straps, or acorns.

These cords were originally US Army issued hat cords for the US Army Cavalry Dress Hat, also known as the Jeff Davis Hat or Hardee Hat. The originals were made of worsted wool. These were issued with the Hardee hats, which were technically dress hats, but were worn in the field, often being altered into more comfortable hats or replaced by non-regulation slouch hats procured by the soldiers.

The Dragoons were a heavily armed branch of the Army. They differed from the Cavalry in their tactics and methods of battle. Their orange hat cords and piping clearly distinguished them apart from the Cavalry. One significant difference in their tactics was that the Cavalry would fight on horseback. The Dragoons only used their horses for movement to the engagement area, then they would dismount and hide the horses. This protected their horses and provided them a greater degree of stealth.
